Settlement Meetings

Settlement meetings can take place at any stage in the family law process, usually hosted by lawyers from one of the sides to the dispute. Settling a case prior to court action is preferred, as it will avoid additional time, costs and emotional hardship on both sides.

Nobody likes to talk about it, but separation and marriage breakdown are very common in our society. Nobody likes to think about the breakdown of a marriage, but statistics show that up to 50% of couples do end up divorced at least once in their lives. If children and assets are involved, things get even more complicated. There is a multitude of rules and regulations governing divorce, and we are here to help you navigate through them and get the best settlement possible.

Hague Convention Applications

Having your children wrongfully taken or not returned to you by their other parent is devastating. We are experienced in dealing with child abduction issues from Canada or to Canada. A Hague Convention application may be made when a child is taken or retained across an international border, away from his or her habitual residence, without the consent of a parent who has rights of custody under the law of the habitual residence, if the two countries are parties to the Convention.

Spousal Support

If you need spousal support (or are being requested to pay), we can help you negotiate the best outcome possible for your circumstances and budget. There are numerous ways the amounts can be calculated and avenues that can be taken to increase your chances of obtaining a fair settlement. Property and Asset Division

During your relationship, choices are made by one or both of you to purchase, sell or invest in assets or properties. When that relationship ends, how do the courts decide who receives what? Especially when one spouse has a higher earning potential or inherited assets, things can get very complicated. We can apply our knowledge of the law and experience to make sure that you get a fair division of assets, and will help you draft a Marriage Contract to protect yourself should a marriage breakdown occur.

Family Responsibility Office Negotiations

The Family Responsibility Office of Ontario is responsible for enforcing Court Orders for spousal and child support. Each year they assist over 400,000 families in collecting these payments and making sure that court orders are kept up to date, for the welfare of the receiving families. Cohabitation Agreements

There are many reasons why having a cohabitation agreement can benefit both parties to a common-law marriage, including protecting both of your assets in case of a separation and protecting your estate planning. They can also be useful when you are much wealthier than your partner, or if you own a business. Ask us how we can help you draft an agreement that will help give you both peace of mind.

Marriage Contracts

Who owns what in a marriage? How do you divide the assets evenly and is it always 50/50? How do you make sure that the law upholds your rights after a separation or divorce? What about gifts or inheritances? Pension plans? High value assets or businesses? We can help you understand the implications and how to handle a fair division of assets in a Marriage Contract. Notary Public and Commissioner

We provide Notary Public and Commissioner services for those needing affidavits, or for notarizing documents as genuine, for court proceedings or other purposes. As of July 1st, 2013 all licensed paralegals in Ontario are certified Commissioners for taking Oaths (Affidavits).

Family Law Trials

There are three court systems in Ontario relating to Family Law. The Ontario Court of Justice, The Superior Court and The Family Court of Justice and Superior Court. Trials can be lengthy and expensive for both sides, and while we don’t advocate needless litigation, sometimes that is the only way to resolve issues. Caron Family Law has extensive courtroom experience that many family lawyers do not, and we are certainly able to advocate for you if needed.
